Bloftis
Spring Events
The festival itself is mainly held at the Callasta Capital, where the market squares are flush with music, food, and events for all ages in the morning! Another common sight during this time of year is the annual migration where very special creatures come to visit…Bloftis!!
They tend to arrive in large pastel-colored groups drifting on the soft wind, which are called blooms! They are small, soft, and squishy, completely docile creatures that pretty much only move by letting the breeze carry them along.
They usually appear by the first week of the festival and hang around until the end of the season when the harsher summer winds spirit them off into the horizon. It’s not known exactly where they go, only that they will surely return the next year on the spring breeze!
It is believed that if a blofti lands on your face during the festival, you will surely find love that year! There is an entire event dedicated to this local legend, where many Corseis will stand beneath the blofti bloom and wait for one to land on their face before gently throwing them back into the wind! Some folks are also sentimental and will occasionally capture them as pets! They are not beginner-friendly, however, and require a hefty amount of care, dedication, and maintenance to keep them happy and healthy. This is mainly because bloftis are not sedentary, and spend their entire lives in the air until death. |
Should they remain on the ground for too long, they will lose the puffy aerated pores in their skin. This causes them to shrink, and all their mass and organs squish together under gravity, leading to death.
Oddly enough they also smell vaguely sweet like confectioner’s sugar, leading some to speculate how they might taste. The actual consumption of these creatures is heavily frowned upon given their significance to the Mariëls festival. There are, however, small marshmallow versions sold as treats for children!
